Staten Island Parent Newsletter - June 27, 2017

Dear parents, grandparents, guardians and education activists,

This is my last newsletter before the summer recess, so I want to congratulate you on completing another school year. I hope you enjoy a safe and relaxing summer. I'm looking forward to another challenging and rewarding school year working with you again come Sept. 7.

Upcoming events

  • Wednesday, June 28: Come to a "Give Back Wednesday" benefit dinner at South Fin Grill from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at 300 Father Capadanno Blvd. on Staten Island. There will be food, games, resources and fireworks. South Fin Grill will donate 5 percent of its earnings from the evening to Person Centered Care Services, a disability services organization on Staten Island. See the flier »
  • Monday, July 19: There will be a free Healthy Homes workshop about lead poisoning and sources of lead from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in English and 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. in Spanish at 206 South Ave. on Staten Island. Light refreshments will be served. This is the first of four Healthy Homes workshops that will be offered this July and August on Staten Island. Summer news

  • Free adaptive aquatics class for people with disabilities: There will be a free swim class for people with disabilities at Lyons Pool at Lyons Boulevard and Pier 6 on Staten Island this summer. It will run from July 10 to Aug. 18 on Mondays through Thursdays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Registration will be done by lottery. You have until July 4 to enter the registration lottery.   • Calendar of free and low-cost summer events: New York Parenting has a handy events calendar with family-friendly things to do in the city all summer. Check it out »
  • Enroll in a free summer parenting class: Starting on July 14, Families on the Move New York City, Inc. will offer a free six-week parenting class at 230 Broad St. on Staten Island. It will run on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. Child care and MetroCards will be provided. To register, call 347-682-4871. See the flier for Monday classes »

    The same parenting class will also be offered on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at 255 Westwood Ave. on Staten Island from July 12 to Aug. 16. See the flier for Wednesday classes »

  • Job opportunities with Workforce1 Career Centers: Workforce1 Career Centers located all over the city are available to help you find employment opportunities. Education news

  • Summer school details: Students who did not make the promotion standards for their grade this year should have received letters with information about summer school. If your child received this letter, you can find the class schedule and other helpful information on the DOE website »
  • Extended school year for students with disabilities: Some students' Individualized Education Programs include a 12-month school year. If your child has a 12-month school year, you can find information about school during the summer months on the DOE website »
