According to the results of a Quinnipiac poll, released on Feb. 8, New Yorkers say they trust the UFT more than the mayor, 56 percent to 31 percent, to do what's best for public school children. UFT President Michael Mulgrew said, "I want to thank millions of public school parents and other New Yorkers who have given their teachers such a vote of confidence."

The UFT hosted the NAACP State Conference’s quarterly conference on Jan. 14. NAACP New York State President Hazel Dukes introduced UFT President Michael Mulgrew, who welcomed the 250 participants, briefing them on his concerns about the state of education in light of the mayor’s and governor’s recent State of the City and State of the State addresses, respectively.

I wrote the following letter to parents, which ran as an ad in the Daily News on Jan. 9, to set the record straight.

So the sea of pink — shirts, ties, T-shirts, hats, blouses and even shoes — that marked Pink Day on or around Oct. 19 in schools and classrooms across the city symbolized the concerted effort of UFTers to halt the scourge of breast cancer and keep everyone healthy and “in the pink.”

“Every single child has a right to go to school without being intimidated or harassed, and every parent has the right to know that their child can go to school safely,” UFT President Michael Mulgrew said at a press conference at City Hall on Oct. 19 to announce a new anti-bullying hotline. The confidential hotline, staffed by licensed counselors, operates weekdays from 2:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

As the number of homeless children attending New York City schools grows, UFT Vice President for Elementary Schools Karen Alford told a joint hearing of the City Council’s Education, General Welfare and Youth Services committees on Oct. 18 that “some of this administration’s policies are working at cross purposes to its stated goals” of helping these children.
