Cuomo says new teacher eval plan could be implemented by June

A new teacher evaluation system for city schools could be implemented as early as June 1, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Feb. 20. In a previous announcement, the governor said that if the city won’t get to a teacher evaluation agreement with the UFT by a set date, he will direct the State Education Department to set up a binding arbitration process that will get the two sides to an agreement.

UFT President Michael Mulgrew responded with the following statement:

We’ve seen the kinds of plans the state has approved. We are comfortable with them because they are about helping teachers help kids, which is something that we don’t often hear from the city. So while I would prefer to get to a negotiated settlement, with this in place I know a deal will get done.
