Mulgrew on out-of-time school staffing

On Friday, July 15, the Department of Education released information about staffing changes at six schools designated as 'out of time' for the 2015–16 school year (Lehman HS, JHS 80, August Martin HS, Banana Kelly HS, Fordham Leadership Academy and John Adams HS). Staff at all six schools had to reapply for their positions for the 2016–17 school year, with 245 out of 454 teachers (about 54 percent) being retained.

In response to the news, UFT President Michael Mulgrew issued the following statement:

Mandated re-staffing of out-of-time schools misdiagnoses the real problem: these schools have been hemorrhaging teachers for years. A UFT review of these schools last September found nearly two-thirds of the educators working there in 2010 had voluntarily left by 2015. Nearly half went to other New York City public schools. Another 23 percent retired and some 21 percent left for different school systems or different careers. These eight schools need good leadership, support and stability, not another spin of the revolving door.
