Beware phone scam targeting child care providers
A group of scammers has been posing variously as insurance salesmen or UFT staffers and contacting UFT providers in an effort to steal their personal information and money. The scammers claim to be from the UFT or an insurance company in an effort to trick you.
If you receive an unsolicited call from an insurance company, do not give them any personal information, including Social Security or credit card numbers. Excuse yourself and hang up the phone.
UFT staff will never ask you for personal financial information over the phone. If someone claiming to be from the UFT asks you for this information by phone, do not give it.
The scammers have already contacted numerous providers, falsely advising them that an inspector from the Environmental Protection Agency will be inspecting whether they have home insurance and that, if they do not have it, they must buy it. This is false.
In previous efforts to con our members, the scammers have called from the following numbers, typically in the evening: 888-337-5186, 718-337-5186 and 347-295-1884.
Again, do not give any information whatsoever to any companies or callers you suspect have fraudulent motives — and please warn other providers you know to be on guard against this scam.
