Welcome to science camp! Thanks to a new partnership between the UFT’s Family Child Care Providers Chapter and New York’s public media station WNET, more than 130 providers are now ready to make science come alive for their students using WNET’s “Sid the Science Kid” Science Camp curriculum.

Providers were introduced to the curriculum, which draws on WNET’s “Sid the Science Kid” educational television show, at professional development sessions hosted by WNET on four Saturdays in May and June. The goal of the curriculum, designed to create an immersive five-day “science camp” experience, is to introduce young children to the world of science through hands-on experimentation, focusing on the use of scientific tools like magnifying glasses and scientific charts.

Providers at the half-day trainings got a glimpse of the lessons and experiments that form the curriculum, watching clips from “Sid” that they can use in their programs to accompany instruction and using magnifying glasses to examine plants and fruits.

Tammie Miller, the providers chapter chair, praised the new initiative. “I’m very excited that WNET has reached out to us to engage with providers because we are always eager for any opportunity to introduce new learning materials into our programs,” Miller said.

“Like Sid, the young children we teach are naturally curious about the world around them, and the Science Camp curriculum is a wonderful way to encourage that curiosity and teach our children about science.”
