With Mayor Bloomberg moving to slash child care subsidies for more than 14,000 low-income children in the city’s 2013 budget, UFT President Michael Mulgrew defended the importance of subsidized child care for New York’s working families at a state Assembly hearing on May 3.

Provider Appreciation Day proclamation

In an effort to recognize the hard work and dedication of child care providers across New York State, Governor Cuomo has proclaimed May 11, 2012 as “Provider Appreciation Day!”

UFT-represented family child care providers from the Bronx.

Thanks to UFT pressure, 45 family child care providers who worked for the Bronx-based Hunts Point Multi-Service Center for four months without being paid have received $174,956 in back pay. After the UFT and providers brought a lawsuit on Feb. 2, the city’s Administration for Children’s Services paid the overdue checks on what turned out to be a lucky Friday, April 13.

Why join the UFT?

  • “I love the union and am very pleased we have it. We needed a union desperately to fight for us. We could not have won the 2007 market rate without a union backing us…and God knows we need any extra money to buy supplies and everything that we need for our children.” ~ Maria Varona
  • “I joined the union to have a voice and get people to recognize that we are not babysitters. We are professionals and we love and enjoy what we are doing and demand respect.” ~ Jacqueline Brooks
  • “As parents and child care providers we need a union. We need someone to stand with us and to fight for us. The union can’t pay bills for us, but they can stand with us and show that we are one. That’s what the union is for me.” ~ Rinelle Knight
  • “You get empowerment from being in the union because you’re not alone. For a long time, providers were alone in our fight and did not know where to turn for help. Having a union behind us has given us power and it has given us respect.” ~ Linette Ebanks
  • “Before we joined the union, we were mistreated and misled. We did not know where to turn. We wouldn’t have a voice and we wouldn’t have trainings provided by the union. The UFT is really needed for people like us.” ~ Miriam Campbell
  • “We need a union. We couldn’t do it by ourselves so we need other people to help us to get stronger, build our business and fight for us.” ~ Kim Geddess

UFT providers do amazing things every day. We will try in this series of featured providers to highlight a few examples of the wonderful work that providers do. We hope these stories of colleagues’ struggles and successes will bring our chapter closer together and inspire pride in our role as the first teachers for New York’s children.
Cause, concern & solution: helping young people reach their potential

Christina Winslow has a cause, she has a concern and she says that she just may have a solution: confront community issues by helping young people reach their potential. That’s also the name of the enterprising Queens provider’s seven-year-old nonprofit, A Cause, A Concern, A Solution.

Voice of the Chapter Chair
Tammie Miller

This year will be a great one for New York City’s 28,000 family child care providers. After years of waiting, the benefits in our contract that have not yet been implemented will go into effect over the next nine months. Chief among these is our health care coverage.
