TRS is still in business

At press time, the Teachers’ Retirement System was operating with limited staff and services because its building at 55 Water St., Manhattan, was closed due to severe flooding from Hurricane Sandy.

The TRS has initiated a disaster recovery plan enabling its staff to continue to provide services to members via a call center, a walk-in center, online filing and a mail center. Member service representatives are available at the TRS’ regular number, 1-888-869-2877, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding official New York City holidays.

Representatives do not have direct access to member-specific account information, so some inquiries will require a callback.

The TRS also opened a temporary walk-in center at the offices of the New York City Board of Education Retirement System (BERS) at 65 Court St., 16th Floor, in Brooklyn. Member services representatives will be able to accept forms, such as retirement applications and loan applications, but will not be able to access member-specific information. The center will operate on the same schedule as the call center.

Members who wish to file loan applications are advised to check their eligibility and their available loan amount on the TRS website, where they can also file directly online.

Regular mail sent to the TRS at 55 Water St. New York, NY 10014, will be rerouted to the TRS emergency location.

If members need general information or have a question that is not time-sensitive, they should visit the TRS website.
