LearnUFT courses in Staten Island

LearnUFT courses are now available at the UFT's Staten Island borough office! The fee to register is $30 per course for teachers and $15 per course for paraprofessionals. Participants will receive two CTLE hours. Courses are available for both teachers and paraprofessionals. In order to ensure that you are not signing up for a course you have already registered for or attended, please check to be sure you are registering for the correct session.

Courses Offered

Educating Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Participants will develop an understanding of autism spectrum disorder and behaviors associated within the spectrum; employ instructional strategies to engage students and address educational needs; and understand the role of the educator in supporting students with autism spectrum disorder.

Math Rules! That Impact Students' Mathematical Understanding: Tips and Tricks
Participants will deepen understanding of numbers and operations in base ten (P-5) and number systems (6-12) through engaging in professional collaboration and develop a toolkit of effective instructional strategies to support the standards for mathematical practice and the instructional shifts.

Specially Designed Instruction: Putting the Individual in IEP
Define specially designed instruction. Understand barriers to learning as they apply to the most common classifications for student with disabilities. Identify strategies to address student needs. Learn to use specially designed instruction (using an IEP) to meet the unique needs of a student.

Understanding Equality: Its Role in Developing Algebraic Reasoning
Participants will represent and engage in mathematical problem solving tasks to deepen algebraic thinking; analyze the difference between operational and relational understanding of the equal sign; and identify misconceptions students have regarding the use and purpose of the equal sign.

Universal Design for Learning: Strategies to Support All Learners
Participants will explore the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), make the connection between student engagement and achievement and build a toolkit of strategies to support student engagement.
