LearnUFT courses for Paraprofessionals

LearnUFT is proud to offer professional learning courses open to paraprofessionals, including many specifically designed to meet their needs. Remember that only paraprofessionals who hold a Level III teaching assistant certificate are required to collect Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) hours. Level III teaching assistant certificate holders are required to collect and track 100 PD CTLE hours in each five-year cycle. Of those 100 hours, 15 hours must be in the area of instruction for English language learners.

  • Working Together: Integrated Partnerships in the ENL Classroom (LearnUFT Bronx)
    May 1, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Bronx teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will understand the value of teacher partnerships when supporting English language learners in the integrated classroom, determine the components of effective co-teaching and build a toolbox of techniques for the integrated ENL classroom. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • Using Questioning and Discussion Techniques (Component 3B) (LearnUFT High Schools)
    May 2, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    Questioning is at the heart of teaching and learning. This workshop will focus on ways educators can refine their questioning techniques in order to create a more student-centered classroom. We will also discuss questioning strategies designed to differentiate content for all students. Strategies educators can use to help students generate their own questions will also be discussed. Two CTLE hours will be awarded.

  • Educating Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (LearnUFT Bronx)
    May 7, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Bronx teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will develop an understanding of autism spectrum disorder and behaviors associated within the spectrum, employ instructional strategies to engage students and address educational needs and understand the role of the educator in supporting students with autism spectrum disorder. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • Second Language Acquisition: Meeting the Needs of ELLs (LearnUFT Queens)
    May 9, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Queens teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will examine the characteristics of English language learners in each stage of second language acquisition and explore strategies while considering implications for planning instruction to meet the needs of ELLs. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • ELLs in the Mathematics Classroom (LearnUFT Queens)
    May 11, 2019 - 9:00am - 11:00am

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Queens teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will describe the characteristics of language performance at each proficiency level. Participants will also be able to name strategies that can be implemented at each proficiency level to provide students with access to mathematical problems. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • The Power of Formative Assessments (LearnUFT Queens)
    May 11, 2019 - 9:00am - 11:00am

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Queens teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will focus on how to use formative assessments to check for understanding to guide student learning and instructional practice. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Brooklyn teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will explore the six models of co-teaching and consider how flexibility in teaching strategies can enhance student learning outcomes. Participants will also utilize a variety of instructional practices to strengthen the co-teaching partnership. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • Igniting Writing Instruction to Strengthen Student Engagement (LearnUFT Brooklyn)
    May 11, 2019 - 10:00am - 12:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Brooklyn teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will practice strategies for engaging students productively in the writing process, make connections between pre-writing activities and the writing process and experience activities that facilitate writing through speaking and listening. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • Getting to Know Our ELLs: Understanding the Language Proficiency Levels of Our Students (LearnUFT Brooklyn)
    May 11, 2019 - 10:00am - 12:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Brooklyn teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will describe the various student attributes for their designated language proficiency levels, use the New Language Progressions to design instruction for ELL students and incorporate strategies to increase interaction and critical thinking for ELL students. Two CTLE hours will be offered.
