LearnUFT courses for Paraprofessionals

LearnUFT is proud to offer professional learning courses open to paraprofessionals, including many specifically designed to meet their needs. Remember that only paraprofessionals who hold a Level III teaching assistant certificate are required to collect Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) hours. Level III teaching assistant certificate holders are required to collect and track 100 PD CTLE hours in each five-year cycle. Of those 100 hours, 15 hours must be in the area of instruction for English language learners.

    February 28, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    How do educators know if instruction is impacting student learning? This LearnUFT session for teachers and paraprofessionals in Queens will focus on how to use formative assessments to check for understanding to guide student learning and instructional practice. Two CTLE hours will be given.

  • Manipulatives in the Math Classroom (LearnUFT Queens)
    February 28, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT session for Queens teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will develop an understanding of how the use of manipulatives in the math classroom impacts student mathematical thinking and builds conceptual knowledge. Participants will also engage in productive struggle with the use of hands on materials to explore and apply mathematical vocabulary. Two CTLE hours will be given.

  • IEP 101: Putting the I in IEP (LearnUFT High Schools)
    March 6, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for high school teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will discuss the research behind special education policies, identify the components of an IEP, and examine and use criteria for developing a PLOP and as SMART goal. Two CTLE hours will be awarded.

  • Integrated Co-Teaching Models (LearnUFT Bronx)
    March 6, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Bronx teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will explore the six models of co-teaching and consider how flexibility in teaching strategies can enhance student learning outcomes. Participants will also utilize a variety of instructional practices to strengthen the co-teaching partnership. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • ELLs in the Mathematics Classroom (LearnUFT Queens)
    March 9, 2019 - 9:00am - 11:00am

    In this LearnUFT session for Queens teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will describe the characteristics of language performance at each proficiency level. Participants will also be able to name strategies that can be implemented at each proficiency level to provide students with access to mathematical problems. Two CTLE hours will be given.

  • Strategic Learning: The Five Guiding Principles of ELL Instruction (LearnUFT Queens)
    March 9, 2019 - 9:00am - 11:00am

    In this LearnUFT session for Queens teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will explore research-based core principles as a frame for ENL instruction, practice engaging instructional strategies to increase ELL students' access to content, reflect on how specific strategies promote integration of content and methodology and build a toolbox of techniques for integrated ENL classrooms. Two CTLE hours will be given.

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Brooklyn teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will develop an understanding of autism spectrum disorder and behaviors associated within the spectrum, employ instructional strategies to engage students and address educational needs and understand the role of the educator in supporting students with autism spectrum disorder. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • Deconstructing Complex Sentences for Improved Comprehension and Language (LearnUFT Brooklyn)
    March 9, 2019 - 10:00am - 12:00pm

    The Deconstructing Complex Sentences strategy and approach integrates content area (social studies and science) learning and language development. Consisting of multiple steps that address vocabulary knowledge, the relationship between various ideas expressed through transitional/signal words, and ultimately reading comprehension, learners will improve in reading and writing complex sentences. Two CTLE hours will be offered.
