LearnUFT courses for Paraprofessionals

LearnUFT is proud to offer professional learning courses open to paraprofessionals, including many specifically designed to meet their needs. Remember that only paraprofessionals who hold a Level III teaching assistant certificate are required to collect Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) hours. Level III teaching assistant certificate holders are required to collect and track 100 PD CTLE hours in each five-year cycle. Of those 100 hours, 15 hours must be in the area of instruction for English language learners.

  • Growth Mindset for the Little People (K-2) (LearnUFT Elementary Schools)
    September 27, 2018 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    At this LearnUFT session for elementary school members, participants will explore the differences between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset and how those differences can change a child’s thinking about success in the classroom.

  • Getting to Know Our ELLs: The Language Proficiency Levels of Our Students (LearnUFT Bronx)
    October 3, 2018 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Bronx teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will describe the various student attributes for their designated language proficiency levels, use the New Language Progressions to design instruction for ELL students and incorporate strategies to increase interaction and critical thinking for ELL students. Participants will earn two CTLE hours.

  • Understanding Equality: Its Role in Developing Algebraic Reasoning (LearnUFT Bronx)
    October 3, 2018 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Bronx teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will represent and engage in mathematical problem-solving tasks to deepen algebraic thinking, analyze the difference between operational and relational understanding of the equal sign and identify misconceptions students have regarding the use and purpose of the equal sign. Participants will earn two CTLE hours.

  • The Fundamentals of Small Group Instruction (K-3) (LearnUFT Elementary Schools)
    October 4, 2018 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for elementary school teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will collaboratively plan appropriate instruction to support the needs of their students. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • First Things First (LearnUFT Bronx)
    October 6, 2018 - 9:00am - 11:00am

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Bronx teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will examine beliefs about home language and culture to ensure the whole child comes into the classroom, consider the value of strengthening a child's first language to foster learning and develop proficiency in English and explore strategies to scaffold instruction for children in the classroom. Participants will earn two CTLE hours.

  • Roll the Dice: Fostering Mathematical Fluency (LearnUFT Bronx)
    October 6, 2018 - 9:00am - 11:00am

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Bronx paraprofessionals, participants will be exposed to research that suggests games are a way to build conceptual understanding and fluency, play games that are designed to develop place value and algebraic thinking and reasoning skills and plan adaptations that allow participation by diverse groups of learners. This workshop is for paraprofessionals only. Participants will earn two CTLE hours.

  • First Things First (LearnUFT Manhattan)
    October 6, 2018 - 10:00am - 12:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Manhattan teachers and paraprofessionals, educators will examine beliefs about home language and culture to ensure the whole child comes into the classroom, consider the value of strengthening the child’s first language to foster learning and develop proficiency in English, and explore strategies to scaffold instruction for children in the classroom in order to increase access to content.

    October 6, 2018 - 12:00pm - 2:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Bronx teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will examine beliefs about home language and culture to ensure the whole child comes into the classroom, consider the value of strengthening a child's first language to foster learning and develop proficiency in English and explore strategies to scaffold instruction for children in the classroom.   • Working Together: Integrated Partnerships In The ENL Classroom (LearnUFT Manhattan)
    October 6, 2018 - 12:30pm - 2:30pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Manhattan teachers and paraprofessionals, educators will examine the value of teacher partnerships when supporting English Language Learners in the integrated classroom, explore the components of effective co-teaching, and build a toolbox of techniques for the integrated ENL classroom. Participants will earn two CTLE hours.
