LearnUFT courses for Paraprofessionals

LearnUFT is proud to offer professional learning courses open to paraprofessionals, including many specifically designed to meet their needs. Remember that only paraprofessionals who hold a Level III teaching assistant certificate are required to collect Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) hours. Level III teaching assistant certificate holders are required to collect and track 100 PD CTLE hours in each five-year cycle. Of those 100 hours, 15 hours must be in the area of instruction for English language learners.

  • Strategic Learning: The Five Guiding Principles of ELL Instruction (LearnUFT Queens)
    May 25, 2019 - 9:00am - 11:00am

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Queens teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will explore research-based core principles as a frame for ENL instruction, practice engaging instructional strategies to increase ELL students’ access to content, reflect on how specific strategies promote integration of content and methodology and build a toolbox of techniques for integrated ENL classrooms. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • Getting to Know Our ELLs: Understanding the Language Proficiency Levels of Our Students (LearnUFT Queens)

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Queens teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will participants will describe the various student attributes for their designated language proficiency levels, use the New Language Progressions to design instruction for ELL students and incorporate strategies to increase interaction and critical thinking for ELL students. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • Strengthening Literacy Skills Through Vocabulary Instruction: What's the Word? (LearnUFT Queens)
    May 25, 2019 - 9:00am - 11:00am

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Queens teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will examine the research that demonstrates how continuous vocabulary development strengthens students as independent learners, unpack the Common Core Language Standards for vocabulary and learn strategies for explicit instruction of vocabulary. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • Math Rules! That Impact Students' Mathematical Understanding: Tips and Tricks (LearnUFT Bronx)
    May 29, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Bronx teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will advance knowledge to deepen understanding of numbers and operations in base ten (P-5) and number systems (6-12) through engaging in professional collaboration and develop a toolkit of effective instructional strategies to support the standards for mathematical practice and the instructional shifts. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • Using G Suite for Educators (LearnUFT High Schools)
    May 30, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    Classroom technology can enhance instruction, promote student learning, and cultivate an environment of respect and engagement. In this workshop, participants will learn the ways in which the Google G Suite for Education can be used to facilitate classroom collaboration, streamline parental engagement, and bring dynamism to everyday instruction. Participants will learn how to access the cloud, create and share files, as well as collaborate on projects with colleagues and students. You must have an active Gmail account to participate in this workshop. This course is only open for participants in need of CTLE credits.

  • Igniting Writing Instruction to Strengthen Student Engagement (LearnUFT Manhattan)
    May 30, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for Manhattan teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will practice strategies for engaging students productively in the writing process, make connections between pre-writing activities and the writing process and experience activities that facilitate writing through speaking and listening. Two CTLE hours will be offered.

  • The World is a Stage: Bringing Shakespeare to Life (LearnUFT Middle School)
    June 13, 2019 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm

    In this LearnUFT workshop for teachers and paraprofessionals, participants will experience an interactive approach to teaching Shakespeare. Through several reading, writing, listening and speaking activities, participants will turn their classroom into a vibrant world of language and creativity. Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) credits are available.
