Resolution on President Obama’s proposed cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid

UFT Resolutions

WHEREAS, President Obama is proposing cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid as part of a so-called ‘compromise” with Republicans in Congress, and

WHEREAS, cuts in the President’s compromise budget plan start small but escalate over time and eventually add up to thousands of dollars for people who rely on this safety net program, and

WHEREAS, the cut would work by switching from the current standard for measuring inflation to one that grows more slowly, called chained CPI, although the White House stated that its proposal was a compromise and that it would only embrace the cuts if Republicans embrace increases in revenue, and

WHEREAS, the UFT has passed resolutions  regarding previous “Grand Compromise” proposals with the Republicans and has gone on record opposed to budget cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and

WHEREAS, the President has no mandate to cut these benefits, and

WHEREAS, the AFL-CIO came out in opposition to President Obama’s proposal; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the UFT calls upon the AFT, NEA and the AFL-CIO to tell President Obama: No chained CPI, no cuts to Medicare, Medicaid or other cuts to Social Security, and be if further

RESOLVED, that the UFT calls upon the AFT, NEA, and the AFL-CIO to tell President Obama to fight to protect the Social Safety Net.
