WHEREAS, nurses are extraordinary individuals who have had a tremendous impact on the lives of countless New Yorkers; each day, they demonstrate a profound sense of caring for others. For 40 years, because they are represented by the Federation of Nurses/UFT representation, led by Anne Goldman, vice president of non-DOE members, thousands of nurses have had their voices heard when decisions are made about patient care, jobs and benefits security, working conditions and hospital policies; and

WHEREAS, registered nurses are an integral and indispensable component of the health care system, and work in over 75 specialties across the average person’s life span, and their compassion and generosity touch the lives of patients from all walks of life; and

WHEREAS, nurses, represented by the Federation of Nurses/UFT, care for the residents of all five boroughs, and for people of every state and virtually every nation who travel to New York City to receive the most advanced medical services available including those at Staten Island University South/Northwell Health; and

WHEREAS, the nurses at Staten Island University South/Northwell Health currently are negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement to address insufficient staffing, healthcare benefits, and poor working conditions throughout the hospital, conditions which are not conducive to providing good care for every patient we treat, and

WHEREAS, the Federation of Nurses/UFT has filed a 10-day notice of a possible strike on April 1, 2019, if an agreement is not reached, therefore be it

RESOLVED, the UFT will stand in solidarity with the Federation of Nurses/UFT members who work at Staten Island University South/Northwell Health; and be it further

RESOLVED, that nurses organized by the UFT will not cross picket lines or work overtime as a replacement worker at Staten Island University South/Northwell Health.
