Resolution in support of the UFT's endorsing Michael McMahon in his re-election for Staten Island district attorney

UFT Resolutions

WHEREAS, in his almost 18 years of public service, Michael McMahon, has been a strong advocate for UFT members throughout his career, from his time in the City Council, to his time as a member of Congress and now as District Attorney; and

WHEREAS, as DA Michael has partnered with us on the "Too Good for Drugs" program which educates students in grades 5, 7 and 9 to educate the youth about the real dangers of drugs and to prevent substance abuse before it begins; and

WHEREAS, Michael created the Staten Island HOPE (Heroin, Overdose, Prevention & Education) initiative to help combat the opioid epidemic; and

WHEREAS, Michael is working to initiate a domestic violence education program across Staten Island Middle and High Schools; and

WHEREAS, Michael is championing a borough wide anti-bullying education program including a poster contest at the elementary school level and an essay contest at the middle school level; and

WHEREAS, as DA Michael has supported our nurses after two recent assaults at Staten Island University Hospital (South Site) by explaining the process, engaging with NYPD at the hospital, conveying to the hospital that our nurses had a right to be in court to support the victims, and ultimately, prosecuting these assaults; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the UFT endorse Michael McMahon in his re-election for Staten Island District Attorney as we believe he will continue to be a strong ally in the arena of justice for our members, our schools and our borough.
