Who We Are

Over 200,000 members strong, the UFT is a federation of teachers, nurses and other professionals working in New York City’s five boroughs. We firmly believe that teaching is both a calling and a profession. As a trade union, we advocate for competitive salaries and workplace practices that advance our profession and the well-being of our members. As advocates for children and for the communities in which we work, we fight for the policies and resources to make all New York City public schools great.

Michael Mulgrew

Michael Mulgrew became the fifth president of the UFT in August 2009 and was elected in a landslide victory by the UFT membership in April 2010, winning 91 percent of the vote. A Staten Island native, Michael attended CUNY’s College of Staten Island where he graduated with a B.A. in English literature and a master’s degree in special education.
