Former Paraprofessionals Chapter Chair Shelvy Young-Abrams, who retired last year after 53 years of service, is one of three UFT heavyweights honored with a special award at the event. She received the inaugural Velma Hill Award, named for the chapter’s founder and first chair.

"It’s crucial for all of us to honor those who opened the doors for us, to keep carrying the torch, to keep opening doors for those who come after us," American Federation of Teachers Executive Vice President Evelyn DeJesus, a former UFT vice president and the national union’s first Latina officer, says in her keynote address.
