Music Teachers

The New York City Music Teachers Association/UFT is the product of a 2006 merger between the UFT’s Music Teachers’ Committee and the Music Educators Association of New York City. MEANYC/UFT is the professional organization for music educators in New York City and Region 12 of the New York State Music Teachers Association (NYSSMA). Our members include K-12 public and non-public school music teachers, common branch and special needs educators, university music educators, and music administrators. The committee co-chairs are Sharon Golub and Roberta Feldhusen.

Our mission is the pursuit of a quality music education for every child. The primary focus of the organization is to encourage a cooperative professional relationship among the music educators of New York City.

  • Encourage, develop and increase the effectiveness of music education in New York City.
  • Encourage a closer cooperative professional relationship among the music educators of New York City.
  • Offer an opportunity for outstanding school musicians to appear in Festival Bands, Orchestras, Choirs, Stage Bands and other ensembles.
  • Offer an educational program through regular meetings intended to be of value to members, and other activities to be approved by the organization, its Executive Board or members.
  • Remain a not-for-profit organization converting all funds available into a program which shall aim to advance music education in New York City.
  • Cooperate with the New York State School Music Association, and the National Association for Music Educators in their programs.
  • Encourage the active support of school administrators, boards of education, community school boards and the general public of New York City in the maintenance and improvement of the place of music education in school curricula.

We sponsor several workshops during the school year which provide professional development for music educators. These workshops meet the professional needs of our members and are a forum for them to network and socialize with each other.

We provide an opportunity for music students to showcase their talents at our middle and high school festivals. We also recognize outstanding music students with our Music Scholarship Fund and, at our annual dinner, honor individuals who have made major contributions to music education in New York City. We provide an opportunity for music educators to meet and network at our fall cocktail party.
