Students, alumni and teachers both current and past celebrated the 100th anniversary of PS 94 in Little Neck, Queens, on May 29. To prepare for the event, each grade chose a decade to research, creating presentations using PowerPoint, video and even a game of “Jeopardy.” On the day of the centennial celebration, students donned fashions from their decade and performed a song that was popular during those years. Second-graders wearing paper army hats to represent the 1940s sang “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”; kindergartners in psychedelic sunglasses sang and danced to the Jackson 5’s “ABC.” Teachers also got in on the fun of dressing up. Local elected officials — including State Sen. Tony Avella, Assemblyman Edward Braunstein and City Council member Paul Vallone — issued proclamations congratulating the school. Vallone also announced that the school would be receiving long-deserved upgrades to its 100-year-old auditorium. Mary Vaccaro, the UFT’s District 26 representative, and Richard Mantell, the vice president for middle schools, also attended the celebration. “It was a lot of fun and really fabulous,” said Linda Courtney, the school’s parent coordinator. “We’ll see everyone back here in 2040 for our 125th anniversary!”
