Third-graders in room 205 at PS 198 in East Flatbush especially relished their pizza party on Oct. 23 because it was a celebration marking their achievement of collecting the most dimes — $152.10 worth — in the school’s drive to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Like each staffer in the school, teachers Simone Murray and Donna Marie Williams and paraprofessional FilomenaLawerente, who teach the winning class, received an empty water bottle with a pink ribbon to fill with dimes. The school held its own Strides march earlier in the week in the schoolyard, with the students holding posters they had made to mark the event. When the tally was complete, the 24 classes at PS 198 had collected $1,027. Chapter Leader Carmela McCann and PTA President Andrea Gomes immediately took the coins to the local bank to convert to a generous check to help fight cancer. “We were embraced by the workers in the bank who were touched by the hard work done by our students,” said McCann.
