Scuoppo gets everyone in the mood with beads and paper hats at the start of the walk.
Everyone at PS 196 in the Bronx took part in raising an extraordinary $8,000 in the school’s third annual Cancer Walkathon on Oct. 22. This year the donation was made to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation because, as organizer and payroll secretary Angela Scuoppo explained, “This is an elementary school and one of our students had cancer, so it brought the need for research closer to home.” Students, teachers and parents got the ball rolling in early October with a giant pep rally, followed by an Oct. 3 bake sale that netted $3,000, a Super Hero Day with students in costume on Oct. 10 and a raffle of gifts donated by community businesses. On the Walkathon day, the 1st-graders circled the block once. The number of laps increased with each grade, with 5th-graders going around the block five times. Assistant Principal Danielle Keane worked with Scuoppo and the school committee on the monthlong fundraising activities.
