In 10 years, 1 in 5 adults will be 65 or older, and many will need caregiving when they reach their 80s. In-service and retired members heard this statistic while learning about the impact of caregiving and strategies for handling it during the school year’s final seminar of the UFT Welfare Fund Medical Learning Series at UFT headquarters on April 30. Rimas Jasin, the executive director of Presbyterian Senior Services, and Sonja Shute, the senior director of the PSS Circle of Care, led the discussion. Participants also learned that those who are caregivers for their parents deal with leaving work early or arriving late, exhaustion and an overall diminished quality of life.
