PS/IS 123 Chapter Leader Ernestine Augustus (center) and middle school volunteers are ready to distribute new winter apparel.
When winter winds finally start howling in New York City, scores of children living in temporary housing or homeless shelters in Harlem will be ready with brand-new mittens, scarves, hats, coats and sweaters to help keep them warm. More than 150 of these cold-weather items, donated by District 5 school staffers, were distributed from the UFT van at PS/IS 123 on Dec. 10 by middle school student volunteers. UFT District 5 Representative Zina Burton-Myrick, who organized the first District 5 Coat Drive with Kappa IV Chapter Leader Ali Fischer, described the campaign as an important way to promote community service among middle school students, especially around the holidays. “The students really enjoyed the chance to give to others,” she said. “You could see their happiness and confidence at being able to do such a great thing.”
