Shauna Innis (fourth from right) of PS 66, the district’s Outstanding Paraprofessional, celebrates with current and former colleagues as well as UFT staff.

The turnout “exploded” — reaching 330 — at District 12’s second annual Scholarship Committee breakfast on April 13, said UFT District Representative Steven Goldberg. Thanks to a partnership with the technology company WebGuyz, 24 students in 5th and 8th grades were awarded brand-new laptops during the celebration at the union’s Bronx borough office. Four 8th-graders also will attend a WebGuyz summer program to learn about coding, augmented reality and other computer skills. “Seeing the students’ and their families’ faces when they’re recognized is priceless,” said Goldberg, who spent the night before the event steaming linens, making centerpieces and preparing with union staff. “Knowing the students are appreciative makes the hard work worth it,” he said. “The kids need to be recognized,” said Shauna Innis of PS 66, who was named the district’s Outstanding Paraprofessional. Innis was “surprised and happy” to be honored, but said paras “always go out of our way for the children.” Lisa Gilbride of PS 300 was named the district’s Outstanding Teacher.
