UFT Assistant Treasurer Tom Brown was among the honorees at the annual District 20 Scholarship Dinner Dance, which drew 250 members of the school communities of southern Brooklyn to El Caribe Restaurant on May 20. Brown, who is also a Teachers’ Retirement System board trustee, received the Service to the Union Award. Douglas Jablon, the special assistant to the president and senior vice president of Maimonides Hospital, was presented with the Service to the Community Award. UFT District 20 Representative Ellen Driesen praised both men: Brown for his work on behalf of all UFT members and for reaching out to individuals who need help; Jablon for being all about community and for “coming through for teachers.” Collaboration Awards went to Chapter Leader Jeff Feil and Principal Justin Berman of IS 187, Chapter Leaders Anthony DeBenedetto and Renee Dixon and Principal Janice Geary of IS 259, and Chapter Leader Olivia Hui and Principal Yuqing Hong of PS 310 for “thinking and planning together,” Driesen said. And for those who make schools smooth-running and happy places, Service to the School Awards were presented to secretaries Gloria Romano of PS/IS 30 and Gail Plagainos of IS 220, teachers Victoria Curto and Linda Eskenazi of PS/IS 180 and paraprofessional Sylvia Gonzales-Delgado of PS 506.
