Twelve teachers and 58 special-needs students worked together to bring their standing-room-only production of the hit musical “The Lion King” to the stage of P4 in Fresh Meadows on June 2. Students from four District 75 sites were bused to P4 for 90-minute rehearsals for 17 weeks. Parents and community members crowded the auditorium for the gala evening performance that followed preview performances at each of the four sites. What began as an idea two years ago became possible with a Disney grant. Teacher Avril Tucker, the choreographer of the production, said one of the students summed up the experience for all of them: “The rehearsals were pretty long, but the experience was amazing. It was fun seeing our parents watching us do our characters.” The cast subsequently performed one song from the score at the New Amsterdam Theater on Broadway on June 10 along with student performers from other schools citywide. Teachers Ella Guerrier and Marissa Adams served as director and assistant director.
