From the number of languages spoken, you might have mistaken it for a meeting of the United Nations. The New York City Association of Foreign Language Teachers/UFT held its 16th annual professional conference on Oct. 26, with more than 300 teachers of Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Russian, Greek, German, Latin and other languages in attendance at the union’s Shanker Hall. The conference, the theme of which was the Road to Communication and Culture: Student-Centered LOTE Learning, consisted of plenary sessions and workshops, several of which were held in French, Italian and Chinese. Keynote speaker Vivian Selenikas, the principal of Long Island City HS and a foreign language educator, spoke of the value of teaching and learning foreign languages for global citizenship in an interconnected world. She also addressed the Danielson Framework for Teaching, the Common Core Learning Standards and the new teacher evaluation system as they pertain to foreign language teachers. These same topics came up in a question-and-answer session. “Most of the questions were about measures of student learning because that process needs to be clarified,” association president Irma Evangelista said. “Our suggestion was to initiate conversations with administrators.”
