Gynmasium, health clinic ceremonies at PS 188, Brooklyn Two ribbon-cuttings in June illustrated just how far PS 188 in Coney Island has rebounded from Hurricane Sandy, which forced the school to shut down for more than a month in late 2012. The first event took place on June 10, when teachers, staff, students and guests of the school — one of the UFT’s original Community Learning Schools — gathered for the dedication of the new Sandra Feldman Gymnasium, named to honor its famous graduate who went on to become president of the UFT and the American Federation of Teachers. Then, on June 19, UFT President Michael Mulgrew was on hand to help launch construction of the District 21 school’s new health center. The center will offer vision, dental, health and mental health services to children throughout the neighborhood through partnerships with the Lutheran Family Health Center, the OneSight Foundation and the SUNY College of Optometry. “Our students deserve every chance for success,” Mulgrew said. “The CLS model stresses the importance of collaboration and that’s evident through this project.” City Councilman Mark Treyger and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, whose office secured $1 million in capital funds toward the cost of the clinic, also attended the event. Meanwhile, the gymnasium — which now sports a beautiful new wood floor in place of the one destroyed by the storm, as well as a high ceiling and ocean blue walls — will serve the students of the school and eventually of the whole neighborhood. UFT Vice President for Elementary Schools Karen Alford, who directs the initiative, spoke at the first event. “Sandy Feldman is smiling down on us as the school and the Coney Island community have this wonderful gift that helps to ensure our children have the opportunity to exercise, be active and fit,” Alford said. Treyger was again on hand as was former City Councilman Domenic Recchia Jr., who helped the school raise the money for the gym.
