From ghoulish zombies to daring superheroes, hundreds of students from prekindergarten through 5th grade at PS 95 marched in costume through the streets of Gravesend on Halloween. “[School is normally] all about rigor,” said Georgia Nikoloudakis, a 1st-grade teacher and chapter leader who donned a hot-dog costume for the occasion. “For one day we let our hair down and let kids enjoy being children.” That enjoyment included a costume contest judged by the school’s middle school students and a special visit from Marine Corps members in uniform. They were celebrating not just Halloween, but also a community effort to raise money for charity and for their school. After struggling to come up with the funds to upgrade the school’s outdated technology, the PTA hit upon the idea of selling students’ artwork to be displayed in local store windows. Art teacher William Lawson guided students’ painting techniques and framed the results, with proceeds from each $25 sale going to the March of Dimes and to the school. “Not only did they get a great art lesson, they also gave back to the community and they’re feeling very proud of their accomplishments,” said Nikoloudakis.
