More than 70 people enjoyed Irish food and culture at the UFT’s Irish American Committee’s annual heritage celebration on March 21 at union headquarters in Manhattan. “Being Irish and Irish American means you have a sense of history,” said Geoff Cobb, a teacher at PS 539 in Brooklyn. Organized by retired teacher Doris Marie Meyer and Alice O’Neil, the UFT Manhattan high school district representative, the event recognized award-winning playwright Seamus Scanlon for transforming CUNY’s Center for Worker Education library. The Cell Theatre group performed an act from Scanlon’s play, “The McGowan Trilogy.” Nicole Connolly, a teacher at PS 19 in Manhattan, said, “It’s important to keep the spirit of diversity at the UFT and the DOE.”
