Lunar New Year Banquet

Dancing with lions
New York Teacher
District 75 members can’t wait to dig in.

Members packed Delight 28 restaurant in Manhattan’s Chinatown on March 15 to celebrate the Year of the Pig at the UFT’s Asian American Heritage Committee’s annual Lunar New Year Banquet. The event featured a traditional Chinese dinner and a “lion dance” by costumed 5th-graders from PS 124 in Manhattan. Guests “fed” red envelopes to the colorful lions to bring good luck, according to folklore. Jennifer-jo Moyer, a 4th-grade teacher at PS 188 in Manhattan who has attended the celebration for 15 years, said she appreciates the “opportunity to mingle with members from all five boroughs.” She says the dinner brings people together to “ring in the new year in a wonderful and energetic way.”
