The rich cultural diversity of P186 in the Morrisania section of the Bronx was acknowledged during the school’s annual multicultural show on May 25. “It’s a day for students to celebrate their families and their cultural heritage and the work they’ve put in,” said Reid Olmstead, the chapter leader of the District 75 school. “It’s a combination of Field Day and the Special Olympics.” Teachers, paraprofessionals, guidance counselors and physical and occupational therapists all joined in to help students prepare for the special day, which is the culmination of work they do with students during the year. The around-the-world celebration had students acting in short skits and representing the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, China, Egypt, Morocco, France and Spain, among other countries. Traditional dances and sports inspired their performances. For the tribute to Austria, students and staff re-enacted the puppet show scene from “The Sound of Music,” which was set in Austria. After the show, children had a taste of foods from around the world. Krystyna Witkowski, a K–2 teacher, led her students in a celebration of Greece. “It’s an experience for them to interact with different cultures and food,” she said. “We had Greek yogurt, Greek salad and shish kebabs, and they enjoyed that.” For the first time this year, the day also featured a glee recital and percussion performance. Olmstead called the show “a staple of our alternate assessment community.” Students aren’t graded, he said, but the event provides an opportunity for them to master the sequence of steps required for their performances.
