Teachers who coach in addition to their other responsibilities celebrated the end of another year’s work and gave out awards to members of the New York City Coaches Association/UFT at the Clearview Golf Club in Bayside on June 13. Among the honorees was Woman of the Year Mary Boyle, who began her coaching career at 18 when she helped start a softball league in Riverdale. Boyle was recognized for her work coaching the girls’ softball teams at John F. Kennedy HS and now at Flushing HS. Yolanda Alford, who is the scheduler for the Public Schools Athletic League and tries to accommodate the needs of all athletes, was awarded the Bill Chisholm Award. In other honors, Carla Nasso, the association’s vice president, received a 30-Year Coaching Longevity Award; UFT staffer Armando Mandes was given the UFT Special Service Award; Mark Weinberg of NY 1 was awarded the Community Service Award; and recent retiree John Demas was honored with the Jim McKay Lifetime Membership Award. Ken Achiron, the association’s president, was honored with a City Championship Award and Harry Singer, a longtime track coach now retired, received the NYC Coaches Association Coaches Award. “We give out awards to people who have the students’ interests at heart, and we hope to encourage new coaches to join our committee so that we can help them accomplish their goals for their sports and their programs,” said Nasso.
