Sixty-one schools across the city were honored for promoting healthier habits among their students over the past school year at the New York City Excellence in School Wellness Award Ceremony held at the Gotham Center on May 28. The award highlights school policies and practices that encourage healthier lifestyles and improve academic achievement. Schools competing for the awards must meet certain criteria in physical education, physical activity, nutrition and wellness. The schools were required to document the activities they initiated to compete for the awards. Manhattan schools not only led with 24 winners, but also won top honors, with Platinum Awards going to PS 154 and PS 72. There were 21 award-winning schools in the Bronx, seven in Brooklyn, six in Queens and three in Staten Island. Awards were presented in gold, silver and bronze categories.Â
