The 1.2-acre cracked asphalt lot adjacent to CS 300 in the Tremont section of the Bronx has been transformed into a state-of-the-art playground for the 1,200 students who share the four-school campus — and a green oasis to be shared with their neighbors. There’s something for everyone. There are benches, fountains, a track, multiple basketball hoops, play equipment and an outdoor garden classroom to promote hands-on learning about earth science, all set against a vibrant school wall mural. The eco-friendly green space is designed to capture up to 700,000 gallons of storm-water runoff each year. Students, staff and parents from CS 300, IS 129, KAPPA III and P10 all had a hand in the design of the million-dollar playground, which was two years in the making. The project was funded by the Trust for Public Land, which has transformed more than 180 public schoolyards, as well as by the MetLife Foundation and the city. At the opening ceremony on June 25, UFT District 12 Representative Steven Goldberg noted, “This transformation has been amazing to see. The community now has a wonderful new space to sit and read and enjoy the garden.” The playground will be open after school and on weekends and holidays.
