While they may never be van Goghs, 50 UFT members raised $1,000 for breast cancer research while trying to reproduce the Brooklyn Bridge in watercolors at Paint Nite at the Staten Island UFT borough office on Oct. 2.

“It was so much fun, and knowing it was part of the Making Strides against Breast Cancer effort made it even more special,” declared Nicole Puglia, a teacher at PS 55. Wearing aprons and caps emblazoned with “hope,” the participants sat at easels and, with paints and brushes at their fingertips, began their creative journey.

Sherylyn Bailey, a teacher in the Absent Teacher Reserve pool who organized the event and is celebrating her 20th anniversary of being cancer free, said, “There was so much joy and happiness in the room that many said they want to do it again.”
