Myrna Connolly’s kindergarten students at PS 25 in the South Bronx gingerly sampled the seaweed but decided they liked much better the carrot wrap sushi that chef Tracy Griffith had prepared for them during her visit on Nov. 18. The young gourmets and their parents enjoyed the exotic tasting experience as part of an afternoon lesson on ways to improve health and lower obesity levels by preparing healthy snacks and meals. Author of the book “Stealth Health Lunches Kids Love: Irresistible and Nutritious Gluten-Free Sandwiches, Wraps and Other Easy Eats,” Griffith worked with each family group, helping them assemble the rice, cream cheese and cucumbers, dust the filling with sesame seeds and roll it all in the carrot wrap. Participants at the afternoon lesson left the classroom with the bamboo mats they used to roll their wraps and, for many, with the new taste of soy sauce on their tongues. Connolly, a veteran of 17 years at the school, described the event as “exciting for everybody.” And Griffith, who had never worked with such young children before, called it “a rewarding experience.”
