News that a snowplow in a nearby supermarket parking lot had backed into and killed the pregnant mother of a 1st-grader at PS 69 on Feb. 13 galvanized the school staff and the whole Sunset Park community. Within days, a fund was established to help raise money for the student’s struggling family. In an act of spontaneous generosity, 5th-grade teacher Christina Bruno, without a moment’s hesitation, turned over the $1,043 that she had just won in the raffle at the school’s annual fundraising dinner dance on Feb. 28 to the fund for the boy’s family. Rosemary Neglia, a colleague and the co-chair of the event, recounted that everyone on the dance floor was cheering when she announced the winning name, but when she approached Bruno with the raffle money and she immediately turned it over, the smiles turned to tears. “It was a beautiful moment,” Neglia said. “And we talked about it for days.” Explaining her split-second decision, Bruno remembers thinking only, “I felt so bad that little boy lost his mom and I have my mom.” Chapter Leader Anna Caligara described her school as a place where teachers care very much about the students. She said that Bruno’s action didn’t surprise her because “that’s the kind person she is.”
