At the April 16 performance of the UFT Players’ original play about hoarders, called aptly enough “Junk Junkies,” committee co-chair Warren Wyss, ever the English teacher even in retirement, explained: “Hoarders are in Dante’s Fourth Circle of Hell — hoarders and gluttons.”

For 18 years, the troupe, now virtually all retirees, has performed works by every renowned playwright from William Shakespeare to Tennessee Williams, as well as original theatrical pieces. This year’s light musical “Junk Junkies” was written by member Barbara Haspel.

“She is a writer, not a hoarder,” Wyss hastened to add. “I know because I’ve visited her home.”

More than 70 theater-goers — a full house — turned out for the play.

“Every single seat was filled,” Wyss reported. “For entertainers, that’s heaven.”
