More than 50 active and retired members came to UFT headquarters on Feb. 10 for an eye health seminar, part of the Welfare Fund’s ongoing Medical Learning Series. The presentation was led by Dr. Douglas Lazzaro, the chairman and professor of the Department of Ophthalmology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He was joined by four of his Downstate colleagues: Eric Shrier, D.O.; Roman Shinder, M.D., FACS; Stephen Kaufman, M.D., Ph.D; and John Danias, M.D., Ph.D. They discussed topics ranging from glaucoma to cataract surgery, macular degeneration, diabetes in the eye, laser eye surgery and aging of the eye. After short presentations with a slide show and video clip, the doctors took questions from the audience and stayed to answer questions. “When a disease goes unnoticed, it can become a more serious problem, so it’s important for our members to understand what the early warning symptoms are,” said Welfare Fund Executive Director Arthur Pepper. Also discussed were new directions in research, genetic testing and other innovative frontiers in the eye health field. Dr. Lazzaro and his colleagues are GHI-participating providers with a private practice in lower Manhattan.
