UFT members learned how to tackle insomnia or help people kept awake at night by a partner’s snoring at a UFT Welfare Fund Medical Learning Series seminar on sleep disorders: Solutions to Getting a Good Night’s Sleep. Dr. Jeremy Weingarten, the chief of pulmonology and the director of sleep medicine at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, discussed the causes of and treatments for a variety of sleep problems at an Oct. 18 meeting attended by about 100 UFT members at union headquarters. The seminar is part of a series of Welfare Fund-sponsored seminars designed to educate and inform members about an array of topics concerning their health and well-being. Dr. Weingarten outlined the stages of sleep — wakefulness, transition and deep sleep — noting how sleep patterns change with age. He explained that alcohol is disruptive to normal sleep; he recommended a warm bath just before going to bed as a good sleep inducer; and he explained additional methods to help get a proper night’s sleep.
