According to evidence-based research, annual mammograms and self breast exams are still the best defense in helping to reduce your risk of getting breast cancer. That was one of the key messages from Dr. Larry Norton, the medical director of the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in his presentation to more than 100 members at UFT headquarters on Dec. 21. The seminar was sponsored by the UFT Welfare Fund in collaboration with SHARE, an organization that offers support for women with breast or ovarian cancer. Dr. Norton stressed that part of being a successful patient is communicating with your doctor and eliminating unhealthy behaviors such as overeating or eating fatty foods. The next seminar in the Welfare Fund Medical Learning Series, about how to manage allergies, will take place on March 15. To register, please call Christine Jittan at 1-212-539-0667.
