Phonemic awareness is an early childhood essential to support students as they listen to and manipulate sounds in words. For literacy centers, my focus is to have practical and functional activities that are easy to make and copy and can easily be developed into a daily routine. For phoneme segmentation, students say the picture word out loud and then use the different colored Post-its to represent each sound in the word. You can also use play dough, counters or other objects you have in the classroom.
