Tackle global challenges: The Conrad Foundation and Destination Imagination seek entrants for the Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge. The challenge is a multiphase business and technical plan competition geared toward high school students. Eligibility: High school students and their coaches (teachers, parents). Funds: Finalist teams receive a travel grant to present at the 2014 Innovation Summit at the NASA Johnson Space Center and Space Center Houston for a chance to win a $10,000 seed grant to develop their product or service. Areas: Using science, technology, engineering and math skills, teams are asked to develop innovative products to help solve global and local problems while supporting global sustainability.

Improve your community: Youth Service America and State Farm Insurance are requesting applications for the State Farm Student Achievement Program. The program provides teachers with funding and training to implement YSA’s flagship school program, Semester of Service, which is an extended service-learning framework through which students apply what they are learning in the classroom to address real-world needs in their communities. Funds: A $1,000 grant for a one-classroom Semester of Service or up to $4,000 for school districts or groups of teachers implementing Semester of Service across multiple classrooms or schools. Library projects: The American Library Association is seeking applications for the Louise Seaman Bechtel Fellowship. The fellowship is designed to allow qualified children’s librarians to spend a month or more reading and studying at the University of Florida’s Baldwin Library of the George A. Smathers Libraries in Gainesville. Applicants must be personal members of the Association for Library Service to Children as well as the ALA; be currently working in direct service to children or be retired members who completed their careers in direct service to children for a minimum of eight years; have a graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program; be willing to write reports about their studies; and agree to present a minimum of three public programs based on their research projects to children in libraries or schools following the completion of their fellowship periods. Funds: $4,000.

Attend a librarians conference: The American Library Association is requesting applications for the Penguin Young Readers Group Award program. The program provides funding for up to four children’s librarians to attend their first ALA Annual Conference. Funds: $600 awards. Applicants must be personal members of the Association for Library Service to Children as well as the ALA; work directly with children in elementary or middle school or public libraries; have fewer than 10 years but more than one year of experience as a children’s librarian by the opening of the conference; and have not previously attended an ALA Annual Conference.

Promote economic education: The Council for Economic Education will honor three outstanding educators from the New York City area with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Teaching Champion Award. This award promotes economic education at the K-12 level by recognizing and honoring teachers who effectively deliver this important content in and out of their classrooms and achieve results. Awardees will receive a cash award of $5,000; a cash award for their school of $2,500 to support economic and financial education; recognition at CEE’s Visionary Awards on Oct. 30; recognition on the CEE’s website, digital assets and communications; and a scholarship to attend the 53rd annual Financial Literacy and Economic Education Conference in Dallas,Texas, Oct. 8–11. This award is open to teachers of all subjects, not just teachers of economics. Applicants must demonstrate how they integrate economics into their teaching. Teachers will not have had to participate in previous CEE training to be eligible. All K-12 certified teachers from public, private or parochial schools may enter. Teachers must have taught in the classroom during the 2013–14 school year.
