Financial literacy for kids

The Jackson Charitable Foundation and Discovery Education are seeking entrants for the “Cha-Ching” Money Smart Kids! Contest. The contest invites elementary school teachers and families to take a pledge to teach kids how to “earn, save, spend and donate.” The winning school receives $10,000. A $1,000 grant is awarded to a charity of the winning school’s choice. In addition, the winning school will receive a financial literacy event at the school and will be entered for a chance to spend time with children’s educational media expert Dr. Alice Wilder, the co-creator of “Blue’s Clues” and “Super Why!” and the characters of “Cha-Ching.” Eligibility: Elementary schools.

Take up space

The Air Force Association is requesting applications for its Educator Grants program. The program seeks to fund grants up to $500 to meet the unmet and unfunded educational needs of students and encourages development of innovative aerospace activities within the prescribed curriculum. Acceptable activities may include, but are not limited to, classroom science or technology demonstration kits; classroom science supplies; science and technology software for K–12 use; science manipulatives; supplies for making flying objects; and supplies for a robotics program. Eligibility: K–12 schools.

Help transform education

Education Pioneers is looking for teachers to apply for the 2018 Summer Fellowship program. The program provides exceptional professionals with stepping stones into education leadership careers that solve problems outside the classroom so teachers and students can succeed inside the classroom. Fellows receive a 10-week summer placement and a $7,200 stipend. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree; two years of full-time professional work experience, which excludes undergraduate or graduate internships; authorization to work in the U.S on a full-time basis for the entire program (international students eligible only if visa assistance is not required); commitment to Education Pioneers’ mission and values; and a passion for K–12 public education.

Seeking inspirational teachers

Nominations for the 2018 cycle of the Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Awards are being accepted. All nominees must be legal residents of the United States. Nominations must be based on experience as a full-time classroom teacher in a K–12 school in the United States or as a college or university instructor in the United States. Nominators must be at least 18 and must have been a student of the nominee. Nominations for teachers by peers, parents, relatives or other individuals based on non-teacher-student interactions will be null and void. Award: $10,000 to selected awardees. To nominate a teacher, complete the online form. Also, create a written, audio or video essay. Written submissions must not exceed 500 words and must be in plain text; audio or video submissions must not exceed three minutes. Written submissions may be submitted online, but if you choose to download the application and mail a hard copy, attach the essay to the application. Learn abroad

The Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program provides funding for highly accomplished U.S. primary and secondary level teachers to take part in an intensive professional development program for three to six months abroad. The Institute of International Education administers the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program on behalf of the U.S. Department of State. The grant covers program costs, including transportation, lodging, host institution fees and related expenses. While abroad, grantees will receive a maintenance allowance designed to assist with the costs of living during the program. Grantees will have the opportunity to apply for professional development funds to support development and research or to cover the expenses of attending a conference or workshop related to their field of teaching expertise. Participating countries include Botswana, Colombia, Finland, Greece, India, Israel, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, the Palestinian Territories, Singapore, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and Vietnam.

Encourage student curiosity

The National Education Association Foundation is seeking applications for its Student Achievement Grants program. The program aims to help educators take the lead on a wide range of projects to improve student learning. Funding may be used for resource materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, technology or scholars-in-residence. Grants are awarded in amounts of $2,000 and $5,000. Eligibility: U.S. teachers, counselors and education support professionals employed by a public school, including public higher education institutions. Applicants must be current members of the NEA. The foundation gives preference to projects that incorporate STEM and/or global learning. It also strongly encourages education support professionals to apply for funding in any area.
