Got milk cartons?

Evergreen Packaging and KidsGardening.org are accepting entries for the third annual Carton 2 Garden Contest. The contest awards schools for innovative garden creations featuring creative and sustainable uses for repurposed milk and juice cartons. Awards range from $1,000 to $5,000. K–12 schools can apply. Schools must collect and use at least 100 cartons for their garden creations. Any cartons will be accepted, including cartons from the school cafeteria or from the grocery store. Schools with the most unique carton creations will be selected as winners. Your school does not need a garden to participate.

Scholarships to study in UK

The English Speaking Union will be offering two scholarships for the Teachers Learning Abroad program this summer in the United Kingdom. TLab scholarships are for New York middle and high school teachers to attend summer courses at Shakespeare’s Globe, the University of Oxford or the University of Edinburgh. Courses are geared toward teachers of English, humanities and theater/drama. The first scholarship will cover the recipient’s tuition fee, accommodations and most meals. The second scholarship is for $1,000 and will go toward the recipient’s tuition.

Looking for more drama?

The Children’s Theatre Foundation of America’s Reba R. Robertson Award recognizes an outstanding teacher of public secondary school theater or drama. The winner receives $5,000 to expand professional interests (for example, study with a master mentor, travel, research, develop learning tools); $1,000 for the honoree’s school to enhance the high school theater or drama program; two distinctive trophies, one for the honoree and one for the honoree’s school; and transportation expenses up to $700 for the recipient to travel to the CTFA Medallion Awards Event. Eligibility: Public secondary school theater or drama teachers.

Inspiring minds

The Elizabeth Hurlock Beckman Award Trust seeks to benefit teachers who have inspired their former students to make significant contributions to society. The award is given to current or former academic faculty members who have inspired a former student to either create an organization that has demonstrably conferred a benefit on the community at large or establish on a lasting basis a concept, procedure or movement of comparable benefit to the community at large. Funds: a 25,000 award. Eligibility: Individuals. Award recipients must be current or former teachers, professors or instructors at a university, junior college, community college or technical school.

Have a garden party

The Nutrients for Life Foundation is looking for applications for the Let it Grow Contest. The contest invites teachers and community adults to vote daily for a school of their choice to win funding for a school garden and supplies. Funds: The grand prizewinner will receive a $5,000 grant to be used toward a garden, gardening supplies and an introduction to a local agronomist. Five runners-up will receive a $1,000 grant to be used toward a garden and gardening supplies. Eligibility: Public, private or parochial schools containing any class with students in grades 6–8. To enter the contest, schools are asked to create an original one- to two-minute video explaining what their school plans to do with the grant money it will receive.
