Fill school library shelves

The Snapdragon Book Foundation provides funds to improve school libraries for disadvantaged children. School libraries serving pre-K–12th-grade students can apply for grants ranging from $1,500 to $15,000. Funding may only be spent on actual books.

Safety and health school resources

The Education Facilities Clearinghouse offers a free video series for the planning and development of safe and healthy schools. Videos include topics such as facilities plans for K–12 school districts, K–12 safety and emergency management plan, and educational specifications. Each video also comes with a list of resources.

Up to $1M for libraries

The Institute of Museum and Library Services supports professional development, graduate education and continuing education to help libraries and archives develop the human capital capacity they need to meet the changing learning and information needs of the American public. Funds: Grants range from $50,000 to $1 million. Eligibility: Units of state and local government and private nonprofit organizations. Eligible libraries include public libraries, public elementary and secondary school libraries, college and university libraries, and research libraries and archives that are not an integral part of an institution of higher education and that make publicly available library services and materials that are suitable for scholarly research and not otherwise available. Support is given for academic programs, professional development and continuing education programs that address digital services (content curation, user services, and infrastructure design and management); participatory or lifelong learning services (maker spaces, learning labs, digital media studios, etc.); community engagement, especially engagement that leads to broadband adoption; applied research that fosters meaningful connections among researchers, practitioners and constituencies; mentorship, service learning and practical models for development; STEM learning support; supporting projects that build capacity to embrace open-ended design challenges and proactive service developments.

Calling all new bio teachers

This award, sponsored by Pearson, the Neil A. Campbell Educational Trust and National Association of Biology Teachers, recognizes outstanding teaching (grades 7–12 only) by a new biology/life science instructor within his or her first three years of teaching (when nominated) who has developed an original and outstanding program or technique and made a contribution to the profession at the start of his or her career. The award includes a travel fellowship and recognition plaque to be presented at the NABT Professional Development Conference, and one year of complimentary membership to NABT.

Program for music therapists

The American Music Therapy Association is seeking applications for the Anne Emery Kyllo Professional Scholarship program. The program supports professional music therapists in their efforts to expand their training and professional interactions through participation in continuing education opportunities. Music therapists can apply for grants up to $500 to be awarded for use toward continuing music therapy education. The award may be used for national and/or regional conferences, continuing music therapy education courses, and/or other continuing education courses that meet the educational activity guidelines as established by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

Study math history

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is looking for applications for the professional development scholarship emphasizing the history of mathematics. The scholarship seeks to provide financial support for completing credited coursework in the history of mathematics or the design and implementation plan for a personal study program with a focus on some aspect of the history of mathematics; creating and field testing appropriate classroom activities incorporating the history of mathematics; and preparing and delivering a professional development presentation to colleagues. Funds: Grants up to $3,000. Applicants must be a current (on or before April 22) Full Individual or E-Member of NCTM; have taught school mathematics for at least three years; and intend to remain in teaching. Teachers of grades 6–12 satisfying the above requirements who already have taken a course in the history of mathematics are also eligible to apply.

Striving for wellness

The 2016 Excellence in School Wellness Award Application is available. This is an opportunity for schools to be recognized for their school wellness efforts. This year’s application has been simplified so it is easier than ever to get recognized. There are six criteria and an innovation award for you to showcase your success. Awards criteria can be found on the New York City Center for Health Equity website.
