100G lab makeover
The Northrop Grumman Foundation requests entries for the Fab School Labs contest that will allow the winning school to get a lab makeover. The contest seeks to drive students’ interest in STEM by giving public middle school teachers and school administrators the chance to create the STEM lab of their dreams and give students access to the latest learning tools and technologies that will stimulate as well as teach. Applicants are required to submit a creative video, photos and a written essay that describes how a Fab School Labs’ classroom makeover would positively impact the school and its students. Public middle schools educators can apply for the $100,000 grants to fund school lab makeovers.

Calling math and science teachers
The Toshiba America Foundation makes grants for projects in math and science designed by classroom teachers to improve instruction for students in grades K–12. Grades 6–12 educators can apply for grants of $5,000 or more; grades K–5 can apply in October.

Literacy booster
Dollar General Youth Literacy Grants provide funding to schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations to help students who are below grade level or experiencing difficulty reading. Grant funding is provided to assist in implementing new or expanding existing literacy programs; purchasing new technology or equipment to support literacy initiatives; or purchasing books, materials or software for literacy programs. Maximum award: $4,000. Eligibility: schools, public libraries, and nonprofit organizations.

Learn about continuum physics
Adam Fleischman, the founder of the Umami Restaurant Group, announced the launch of a new learning program: Continuum Physics. The program is based on the fundamental principles of physics and time that play a key role in shaping decision-making in all aspects of life including business, relationships, and setting and achieving personal goals. As part of the program, Fleischman offers a free 10-chapter website to introduce the concept of Continuum Physics.

Building micro entrepreneurs

A matter of economics
The Council for Economic Education will honor three outstanding educators from the New York City area with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Teaching Champion Award. This award promotes economic education at the K–12 level by recognizing and honoring teachers who effectively deliver this important content in and out of their classrooms and achieve results. Awardees will receive a cash award of $5,000; a cash award for their school of $2,500 to support economic and financial education; recognition at CEE’s Visionary Awards on Oct. 29; recognition on the CEE’s website, digital assets and communications; and a scholarship to attend the 54th annual Financial Literacy and Economic Education Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida, Oct. 7–10. This award is open to teachers of all subjects, not just teachers of economics. Applicants must demonstrate how they integrate economics into their teaching. Teachers will not have had to participate in previous CEE training to be eligible. All K–12 certified teachers from public, private or parochial schools may enter. Teachers must have taught in the classroom during the 2014–15 school year.

Supporting physics teachers
The American Association of Physics Teachers’ Frederick and Florence Bauder Endowment for the Support of Physics Teaching was established to support special activities in the area of physics teaching. Activities can include but are not limited to the development and distribution of innovative apparatuses for physics teaching; traveling exhibits of apparatuses; and local workshops. Maximum award: $500. Eligibility: AAPT members.

Tech job preparation
Udemy seeks entrants for its Teacher Tech Initiative. The initiative seeks to make it possible for the next generation to take advantage of tech job opportunities by offering teachers more training in critical tech skills such as Web development and programming. The company offers free computer technology courses to the first 1,000 K–12 teachers who sign up and up to 95 percent discounts to all U.S. K–12 teachers for a collection of Web development courses through 2015.

Run for your health
The Saucony Run for Good Foundation provides funding to optimize the impact and success of community organizations that promote running and healthy-lifestyle programs for youths. Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations and public schools. Applications will be judged on the following: utilization of running participation for health or well-being in children; programs serving youths not traditionally exposed to running programs; and demonstrating support and inspiration in creating a program that seeks to improve the lives of children through running. Funds: $10,000 grants.
