Music by the numbers: The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Using Mathematics to Teach Music grant encourages the incorporation of music into the elementary school classroom to help young students learn mathematics. Any acquisition of equipment must support the proposed plan but not be the primary focus of the grant. Proposals must address the following: the combining of mathematics and music; the plan for improving students’ learning of mathematics; and the anticipated effect on students’ achievement. Maximum award: $3,000. Eligibility: individual classroom teachers or small groups of teachers teaching mathematics in grades Pre-K-2 who are Full Individual or e-Members of NCTM by Oct. 15, or who teach in a school with an NCTM Pre-K-8 school membership by that date.

How about data? National Science Teachers Association Vernier Technology Awards recognize the innovative use of data collection technology using a computer, graphing calculator or handheld computer in the science classroom. Maximum award: $1,000 toward expenses to attend the NSTA National Conference, $1,000 in cash for the teacher, and $1,000 in Vernier products. Open to K-college science teachers.

Calling all newer science teachers: The National Science Teachers Association is seeking applications for the Maitland P. Simmons Memorial Award for New Teachers. The award provides up to 25 K-12 teachers in their first five years of teaching with funds to attend the annual National Conference on Science Education. Awardees will receive $1,000 to be used to attend the conference. They will also be honored at the Teacher Awards Banquet during the conference. Eligibility: K-12 teachers who have taught less than five years full time at the time of application and are NSTA members in good standing. Priority will be given to applications from NSTA Student Chapters that have been in existence and active for at least two years.

Courtroom education: The Justice Resource Center is offering an introductory professional development session to educators for The Constitution Works program. The law-related/civics program fosters skills and dispositions for 21st century learners. The program is appropriate for grades 5-12. JRC provides teacher professional development sessions, age-appropriate case materials aligned with Common Core and an opportunity for students to role-play their case in a federal court. The session will be offered on Sept. 29, 1–3:30 p.m., at Justice Resource Center, 122 Amsterdam Ave., Room 504, New York, NY 10023.

Class in public policy: Attention social studies, history, government, law and civics teachers! The Justice Resource Center is offering an introductory professional development session to educators for the Project Citizen program. Project Citizen is a public policy and civic education program that engages students of all ages in the research and design of a public policy in their community. The program is appropriate for elementary, middle or high school. JRC provides teacher professional development sessions, age-appropriate case materials aligned with Common Core and an opportunity for students to showcase their presentations in front of a panel of judges. The session will be offered on Sept. 22, 1–3:30 p.m., at Justice Resource Center, 122 Amsterdam Ave., Room 504, New York, NY 10023.

Classroom funding: The Kinder Morgan Foundation provides funding in the following areas: academic programs, including tutoring; arts education programs; and environmental education programs that work with local schools and meet curriculum standards. K-12 schools can apply for grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

Elementary ideas: K-5 teachers are invited to apply online for a $1,000 Toshiba America Foundation grant to help bring an innovative hands-on project into their own classroom. With a Toshiba America Foundation grant, elementary teachers can bring their best new teaching ideas to life. Before submitting a completed proposal, teachers are welcome to call the Toshiba America Foundation at 1-212-596-0620 to discuss their project ideas.

Financial education: CompareCards is looking for applications for its Financially Literate Youth program. The program seeks to support the implementation of financial education programs in K-12 public, private and charter schools with grants of up to $5,000. Applicants’ schools must have implemented or be looking to implement a financial education project or curriculum. Also, there must be a measurement tool in place (or expected to be in place) to assess participation in and comprehension of the financial education project or curriculum. And the school must agree to share overall results with CompareCards upon the program’s completion to assess the effectiveness of the project or curriculum and look for areas to improve.

Funding on the run: The Road Runners Club of America is soliciting applications for the Kids Run the Nation Fund. The fund assists running clubs, events and schools that are interested in implementing or currently have a youth running program. Grants range from $500 to $1,000. Elementary and middle schools that provide organized after-school running programs are eligible to apply. Applicants’ running programs should be more than just a one-time event; be a structured running program that ideally utilizes the RRCA youth running materials; and have a goal to have kids running at least once a week for multiple weeks. However, the program may culminate in participation at a kid’s race.

Make an environmental impact: SCA United States solicits proposals for its Environmental Education Grants program. The program seeks to help educators make a lasting environmental impact on the planet’s next generation in the classroom and beyond. Schools, teachers and environmental clubs can apply for grants ranging from $100 to $5,000.

Having your art in the right place: The P. Buckley Moss Foundation for Children’s Education provides support to organizations that promote the integration of the arts into all educational programs, with a special focus on children who learn in different ways. K-12 educators can apply for grants of up to $1,000. Funding is available to aid and support teachers who wish to establish or maintain an effective learning tool using the visual arts within the school day.
