Money for music education

The Give a Note Foundation and 21st Century Fox are looking for nominations for their grants program, which seeks to recognize music teachers who inspire their students to dig deeper and reach their fullest potential. Twenty school programs will receive $1,000 grants and five teachers will be selected to attend the 2016 National Association for Music Education National In-Service Conference from Nov. 10 to 13 in Grapevine, Texas. Eligibility: Music teachers for grades pre-K–12. Nominators should create a short video (30 seconds) about their music education idol and why that person deserves to win a MusicEd Idol grant.

Environmentally conscious

Project Learning Tree is seeking applications from schools and youth organizations for environmental service learning projects that link classroom learning to the real world. Funds: Grants up to $1,000. Eligibility: Schools and nonprofit organizations. In addition, applicants must have attended a PLT workshop, either in person or online, that provides training, lesson plans and other resources to help integrate these projects and environmental education into their curriculum or youth programs. Projects partner students with their whole school, local businesses, and/or community organizations, and provide opportunities for student leadership. Funds may be used by students for activities such as implementing recycling programs at their school, conserving water and energy, establishing school gardens and outdoor classrooms, improving a forest or restoring a natural habitat.

Help for projects

The Kids in Need Foundation is requesting proposals for the Teacher Grants Program. The program provides educators with funding to purchase the materials they need to conduct innovative projects in their classrooms. Funds: Grants of $100–$500. Eligibility: Pre-K–12 educators. Project may qualify for funding if it makes creative use of common teaching aids, approaches the curriculum from an imaginative angle or ties together nontraditional concepts for the purpose of illustrating commonalities. Innovation and merit account for 40 percent of the evaluation.

Float on the Cloud

Google announced the release of the Google Cloud Platform Education Grants for computer science faculty and students. The grants provide faculty in the U.S. who teach courses in computer science or related subjects with free credits for students to use across the full complement of Google Cloud Platform tools, without having to submit a credit card. These credits can be used anytime during the 2016–17 academic year.

Take the Eco Challenge

Scholastic is soliciting entrants for the Lexus Eco Challenge. The challenge is a STEM contest for grades 6–12. Student teams are asked to tackle environmental issues related to land, water, air and climate, and to create practical solutions. Awards range up to $30,000. Eligibility: Public and private middle and high schools, as well as home school teams. Teams must have a teacher adviser (a full-time teacher employed by the school, not a volunteer) who selects a team of five to 10 students. The team then chooses an environmental topic from a prepared list that impacts their community and implements an action plan and reports on the results.

Math connection

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is accepting applications for the Connecting Mathematics to Other Subject Areas Grants (9–12) program. The program seeks to create senior high school classroom materials or lessons connecting mathematics to other fields. Funds: $4,000 grants. Applicants must be a current (on or before Oct. 14) full individual member or e-member of NCTM and currently teach mathematics in grades 9–12 at least 50 percent of the school day. Funding may be used to purchase books, visual displays, computer programs or displays, slide shows, videotapes or other appropriate media.
