The UFT’s Family Child Care Providers Chapter is in the midst of an ambitious campaign to sign up every single one of New York City’s 21,000 family child care providers as a card-carrying member of the union.
Why are we doing this?
It’s simple: Strength in numbers. The more providers who join the union, the stronger we’ll be and the more we’ll be able to do to improve the working conditions and quality of life for all of New York City’s providers.
Our unity is our strength. We’ve already won a landmark first contract – a contract that for the first time ever extended health benefits to the city’s providers – by standing together in our union and are now negotiating a second.
Our contracts benefit all providers, regardless of membership in the union, but in order to win the benefits that you need we need your input and your voice. That’s why we need all of New York City’s providers to join the union as official, card-carrying members.
With more members, we’ll also have more power when we negotiate with the Administration for Children’s Services and the Department of Health to resolve payment and licensing issues for providers and revise unfair or burdensome regulations. We’ve already won hundreds of thousands of dollars in back pay for providers – both members and non-members – and have fought to overturn wrongful violations for countless others. But we’re only as strong as our members.
There are plenty of other reasons why you should join, too, including several benefits available only to members of the union. Union members have exclusive access to discounted rates for UFT professional development and training sessions; can get reduced-price movie and sports tickets through the union’s Just for Fun Department; and receive an official union identification card.
If you want the respect you deserve as a professional educator, the working conditions you need to educate the children in your care, and a voice in the decisions that affect you, your work, your family and your community, then join the union today!
